PODCAST: The Hidden Barrier of Ethnocentrism
Ethnocentrism in medicine refers to the centering of one's own cultural norms as the ruler by which all other beliefs, values, and practices are measured. The effects are lasting; it can quietly shape the way patients are perceived, treated, and even diagnosed. To better understand its impact, we decided to share the stories and insights of local residents who've experienced bias, cultural misunderstandings, and care that didn't respect their values. Their experiences shed light to the real harm caused by a lack of cultural awareness—and why empathy and cultural humility are necessary steps to move healthcare towards true equity.
